Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
