California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, not a single part of the state is experiencing dryness. This milestone follows grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated wildfire risks and challenged its massive agricultural sector.

A Map Shows No Abnormally Dry Areas

Thursday's report from the national drought tracker showed that the entire state is without any level of drought. This development came after multiple significant storms that helped fill water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a local meteorologist.

From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons

The journey here involved powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, leading to extensive inundation, power outages, and tragic losses. Although that weather began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.

Even into late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were deemed abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the start of the new year washed away those remaining dry spots.

Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge

However, hydrologists note that being out of drought does not mean complete water security. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This mountain snow, which provides approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for the year ahead. Hydrology managers point out that it is premature to determine the outlook for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to preserving this hard-won hydrological health throughout the rest of the year.
