Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
